Leaf Backdrop with Cricut *giveaway*

I’ve got three rules that I tell my wedding clients when they want to DIY something for their wedding:

1. If it’s a new skill that you’ve never learned before, don’t do it. Never tried calligraphy? Don’t try to to learn it and hand address 100 envelopes. Disaster waiting to happen.
2. If you don’t have the time, don’t do it. Wedding DIYs often need to be done in multiples – favors, place cards, centerpieces, escort cards – are not one offs. Time yourself making one then multiple that by the amount you need to make. Do you have that much time to spare?
3. Do not do it for the sole reason of saving money. Trial and error and mistakes will often lead you to spending more money than you would have hiring a pro.

Cricut asked me to design a project that a bride and/or groom could make with their Cricut Explore Air 2 machine that would be hip, modern, and impactful. Pantone recently released their color of the year, Greenery, and I used that to design a fresh paper leaf backdrop. The beauty of using paper, instead of real leaves, for this backdrop is that you can make is way ahead of time. Months even. Spend one night with Netflix, your ipad, and your Cricut to cut all of the pieces needed for this cool backdrop.

How are we going to hang this thing? It’s going to be dependent on the wall you are hanging it on. You can work with strict venue rules by using removable glue dots. As I’m sure you’ve found out, many venues have many rules about what types of decor are allowed in their spaces. A more advanced option would be to bring your own piece of 4′ x 8′ plywood and hang the leaves with spray adhesive. You could also sub in a large piece of foam core for the plywood.

Materials Needed

Cricut Explore Air 2

Three packets of 12″ x 12″ cardstock in shades of green

Cricut mats

Glue dots

I use my (ancient) ipad with my Cricut. It bluetooths to the machine like magic. The Design Space app is really easy to use and functional. I actually prefer the ipad version over the desktop version.

Steps

1. Download the svg file for the backdrop right here. It’s FREE. Yay!
2. Upload the file into Design Space
3.  Cut out all of the leaves. I find that it goes faster if you are able to have a few mats ready to go with cardstock before hitting Go.
4.  Stick the leaves up on wall using glue dots or spray adhesive.
